A belt drive that's even slightly under-tensioned will skip teeth, lose position, and quietly ruin the accuracy you paid for. And you won't feel it — that's the problem.

Belt tension gets treated like a judgment call. Snug it up, give it a pluck, sounds about right, move on. But there's a published number for it, and the gap between "feels right" and the actual spec is usually much bigger than anyone expects. In this video, a belt that looked and felt properly tensioned on a drylin® ZLW linear actuator measured 97 N against a target of 190 N — roughly half of where it needed to be. What closes that gap is a Trummeter belt tension meter. You feed it the belt's mass and span, pluck the belt, and it reads the frequency back as an actual tension value in newtons, hertz, or pound force. It turns a guess into a number you can check against the catalog — and check again after you adjust.
